Game moment
KI im Artwork von Brettspielen?

I recently backed Jurassic Crisis on Gamefound. Had to wrestle with it a bit since the backgrounds were AI-generated. The dinos, though, are based on hand-drawn sketches that were colored with some AI help. Would you have stayed away from the game?

No, AI is when it's used like this for small publishers as a tool. Art is nicer when made by humans, but the grunt work can happily be done by AI. Who would think of shoveling the foundation of a house by hand when there are excavators? I think it's the way things are going that boring tasks get handed off to LLMs and the exciting stuff is done by humans.

We recently had a discussion about AI in games too. I like how Gamefound’s campaign makes it transparent which part of the contribution comes from humans and which from AI. I often prefer artwork created by humans because I just find it admirable when someone does it well. Depending on how you use AI, humans still put in some of the work. I think it makes a difference whether you go with the "typical" AI style that you see everywhere and that personally bores me, or if you put in your own effort and make it more unique. And as Daniel said, in the end, it’s the player experience that counts.

No, I don't have anything against AI and wouldn't skip buying it either.

I see it just like Daniel - AI is just a tool to support me, and like "almost" every tool, it's operated by humans. It's like with a paintbrush: without the right types of brushes or pens, an artist can't achieve certain styles at all. And just because a paintbrush exists doesn't mean it'll paint a masterpiece on its own. It all comes down to who's holding it and what they make of it. Personally, I find the discussion about it all just exhausting and kind of irrelevant now. If you don't know how to craft good prompts, you won't magically create a great image/result with AI either. Creativity, experience, and the right intuition are still essential. But in the end, everyone can decide for themselves, of course. I think we should just embrace the possibilities new tools offer, try them out, and have fun with them – without turning every little thing into a fundamental debate.

Cool to see that the reputation of using AI isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm also really hyped for the game and who am I to judge at KI? I even used AI image generation in Canva to give my Custom Spirit Island spirits a form. :)
