In Fly Away sammeln sich fünf verschiedene Vogelarten am Himmel, um gemeinsam nach Süden zu ziehen. Im Verlauf des Spiels baut ihr euch eine eigene Formation aus 12 Vogelkarten auf. Die Karten dafür liegen in einer gemeinsamen Auslage in der Tischmitte. Reihum nimmt sich jede Person 1 bis 3 angrenzende Karten aus dieser Auslage und legt sie – ohne die Anordnung zu verändern – in ihre eigene Formation. Dabei darf keine bereits liegende Karte überdeckt werden, und am Ende muss die eigene Formation genau wie die Auslage aussehen. Freigewordene Plätze in der Auslage werden sofort nachgezogen. Wie viele Punkte die einzelnen Vogelarten am Ende wert sind, wird durch persönliche Wertungskarten bestimmt, ihr habt also jeder etwas andere Formationen als Ziel. Das Spielende wird eingeläutet, wenn die erste Formation komplett ist; alle anderen spielen weiter, müssen sich dabei aber mit jedem Zug Minuskarten nehmen. Sind alle fertig, kommen die Spezialfähigkeiten der Vogelkarten zum Einsatz: Positionen tauschen, Karten aus der Wertung nehmen oder ihren Punktewert verdoppeln. Anschließend wertet jede Person ihre Wertungskarten aus. Wer seine Formation am klügsten auf die eigenen Wertungskarten abgestimmt hat, sammelt die meisten Punkte und gewinnt die Partie.
