Game moment

Disappointing

A friend brought this game to the con. I was really looking forward to playing our first session, but honestly, it’s my biggest disappointment of the year so far. The theme is great, but the gameplay feels boring and underdeveloped. Your own plans get constantly torpedoed by the other gods, which means you never really get into a smooth flow. The Monument action is poorly thought out. Nobody used the Holy Hand Grenade because the effects just aren’t worth sacrificing those precious actions for. On top of that, the iconography on the player boards needs serious improvement. We kept flipping back to the rulebook constantly because things weren’t clear. The tie-breaker for body parts? Just awful. In the end, three gods were fully assembled while one only had a single body part (bad balance). The jokes only land about half the time, too. It really ruined my mood yesterday, so I’m not keen on playing again and wouldn’t recommend this game to anyone.

Oh, is it more of a personal taste thing where the game just doesn’t click for you, or are there objective criticisms beyond the symbolism? I’m curious to see what others have to say. I find the setting really intriguing, and the humor sounded promising too.

I really like it, and it’s always been a hit in my gaming groups. It is a very competitive game, though, so you have to be into that kind of thing. The Holy Hand Grenade has come up at least once in every game we’ve played, and my fellow players have found the symbolism really easy to grasp. Not every game ends with everyone having a complete deity—that’s just not how the game works. But I think you can influence things a lot, especially through trash talk at the table.
