Game moment
Abroad: Das Reisespiel, das mehr Aufmerksamkeit verdient?

Some games end up on the shelf after a few plays and rarely see the light of day again. But then there are games like Abroad that always make it back to the table. That’s exactly how we feel about this one. We’ve had the game for almost a year now, and both my husband and I love playing it. We’ve tried it out in all kinds of setups—two players, four players, even five—and it’s won us over every time. Still, I prefer the full crew because that’s when things get a little more chaotic. People often compare it to "Auf nach Japan!" but I haven’t played that one myself yet. Abroad, though, is way more demanding and confrontational thanks to its area control/majority mechanics. It went over so well in two playthroughs that the players immediately ordered their own copy.

Und, how was it? I had the feeling last year that the game was a bit overhyped and all over YouTube channels—but now it's pretty quiet around it. Does it still hold up?

Haha, unfortunately pressed save too early and now have something else to add to the post 😅 For us, it's definitely worth it. It's even in my personal top ten. It has no complicated rules, making it easy to start and play with almost everyone, and the mechanics alone require quite a bit of strategy. You also have to constantly adapt your strategy, and no game is the same as another. That’s also thanks to the huge number of location cards, so no game plays out the same way. Probably that’s why the replay value is so high.

That's a nice game, it encourages conversation and has always given us great game nights so far!

We always end up chatting during this game. The beautiful artwork reminds us of past vacations or sparks the desire to visit new destinations. And even though it's an area control game, that aspect kind of fades into the background. Optimizing your own tableau really takes over instead. We really like that!

Grand game that feels like it flies under the radar. One we always come back to :) Would love if the "Playerboards" weren't so flimsy – double layer would be a dream.

Du kannst dir den Wochenplan ja auf zwei Kartons kleben und dann hast du "Double Layer" ;-) Ich finde den Plan eigentlich in Ordnung. Lieber hätte ich Holz-, statt Pappmarker.

That I can totally understand. If there was a Deluxe version, it would already be in my place too 😆

I'm really surprised by that too! I didn't know it was that good.

I like it. Especially thematically, it really pulls me in because a lot of the cards remind me of my travel experiences in Europe. But it's also not bad strategically. You can end up thinking for a while, especially with a lot of cards in hand.
