„War for Eterna“ spielt in derselben Welt wie der Dungeoncrawler X Pen & Paper Rollenspiel „Everrealms of Eterna“. Bezüge zwischen diesen beiden Spielen sind daher bewusst gewählt und gewollt, so z.B. gleichnamige Klassen mit thematisch ähnlichen Fähigkeiten. Die Dämonen haben die Welt der Everrealms of Eterna ins Chaos gestürzt. Wo einst blühende Länder lagen, herrscht nun dämonische Leere. Als Anführer einer von vier einzigartigen Klassen musst du mit deinen Mitspielern die zerstöre Welt wiederherstellen, mächtige Kreaturen beschwören und deine Armeen zum Sieg führen. Erkunde die Karte, errichte Länder und sichere dir Mana und mächtige Boni. Stelle Armeen aus bis zu fünf Kreaturen zusammen und nutze ihre individuellen Fähigkeiten, um deine Gegner zu bezwingen. In den Kämpfen entscheiden Angriff, Verteidigung und ein D20 über Sieg oder Niederlage – doch deine Positionierung und Strategie sind entscheidend. Nach jeder Runde stellen sich die Dämonen gegen euch: Ereigniskarten beschwören neue Feinde, zerstören Länder, entfesseln mächtige Zauber oder zwingen Dämonen zum Angriff. Welche Ereignisse und Dämonen ins Spiel kommen und wie viele Ereignisse pro Runde ausgelöst werden bestimmt ihr selbst – und damit auch den Schwierigkeitsgrad der Partie.
