Ja, so there’s the ending: there are 3 different ending scenarios: first, the Tyrant dies, then the heroes win; second, all heroes die, then evil wins; and third, if the skull on the Tyrant’s Wheel of Fate comes up, the heroes lose too. Each Tyrant has a monster deck with 7 cards each, and one of them is a Mahlstrom card that advances the Mahlstrom. Every move and every attack costs energy. Usually, only the current Favorite of the Gods can attack. You’ve got to balance between taking out monsters and exploring the dungeon, otherwise time runs out before you can uncover the Tyrant and drain his health. At the same time, you need enough experience (for the first boss, that’s 4 cards) to even be allowed to uncover the Tyrant. It’s a bit like pen & paper because your character levels up, gaining new and better abilities through cards, but also because you have to roll dice for skill checks—one critical fail means losing energy, while a natural 20 gives you energy. Energy is basically the most important resource, and yeah, you usually spend it when it’s your turn, but sometimes it’s smart to save a little. The biggest difference is really the ending, which turns it into a short dungeon crawler. You play for about an hour. With the expansion, trees get added, and you play on 2 levels. If it’s too easy, you can throw in 2 Tyrants, or mega monsters that are stronger or have more health, or whatever.
