Brass always goes down well, they said before it hit the table. A great game—but is that eternal first place on the BGG list really justified? What do you guys think?

No way, I find Arche Nova way better. Brass looks awful, way too dark, you gotta squint to see the important details. And the card mechanic is way too luck-based—only being able to do stuff where you have the right cards feels cheap. Plus, halfway through the game, almost everything you’ve built just vanishes? Feels like a waste. I don’t get why this game’s still #1.

Das "düstere" actually looks pretty cool to me. But I'm really into the industrial revolution as a theme. Still, there are definitely games that should be ranked above Brass in terms of placement. Arche Nova is one of them :)

So different are the tastes 😉. I really like Brass, I absolutely love the design, but Arche Nova left me disappointed after the first game. One person had negative points even though they're an extremely experienced player, and I got dealt a card that was terrible for the others, which ruined the mission I had painstakingly prepared for over 30 minutes... At that playtime? NO THANKS! I still won the game, but it wasn’t fun because I was sad that someone could end up with negative points, and that such a random element could be part of such a long game. I only won because we used house rules to ignore the bad cards...

I really like Birmingham. I love the look of it. And I don’t think the day side is all that gloomy either. When it comes to the BGG list, I’m generally cautious because just the number of ratings alone has a big impact on the ranking. Yeah, it does reflect accessibility for a broad player base, but how much someone likes a game is still subjective. For me personally, it’s definitely top 10, but far from a “permanent first place.” If that even exists.

makes me a bit hesitant with the design and theme too—I keep checking it out but I'm more of a nature game kind of guy, so I usually go for ArcheNova, Flügelschlag and stuff like that.

Oh man - that's still a pretty big gap in my gaming history - I've never played Brass. Visually, it doesn't really do much for me either. But it's right at the top of BGG... sooner or later I'll have to check it out though...
